992 GTS day 1 impressions

I posted this on Rennlist . Some of it was thanking them as I struggled with colors in the ordering phase . Much of it I have talked about here .

I picked up my car on Friday and it went straight to PPF . I got it back today and went driving . Here are my first brief impressions .

1) On Friday I asked about my suspension . I gave the tire pressure by memory and was wrong . They were overfilled . Thats solved .
2) Normal mode is almost like sport mode in previous Porsches . Its not quite as aggressive but it finally isn't total boredom .
3) Sport mode really ups the ante . It lets the driver know not just that its ready but that is eager !! I really like that !!
4) With the lightweight package suspension and handling is sublime . It came with Goodyears and I know some here like them . They are acceptable or maybe its the car being that good !! It blows away my 991.2 GTS and I haven't even nailed it hard yet (break in ) .
5) That lightweight package has the glass where it keeps the ambient noise out and retains the engine sound . Its freaking incredible !!
6) PCCB - Yikes !! I only had one car before it back in 2005 and they have come very far. I also have Brembo BBK on my 997.1tt . They are different . PCCB takes this car down better . I actually had to slam them once .
7) Technology - I skip most of it but the two things I feel I need (phone and sat radio) I have with ease . I am all good .
8) The Comfort settings - I am very old school but Im am giving it a whirl (soft close doors .. etc)

I have less than 50 miles on the car . I have to get those stickers off my visors .I got home just in time to see city construction first the first time ever . Thats why I had to slam my brakes . A worker had his truck parked in the street and as I slowly moved alongside it he through a giant hose from the other side that almost hit my car . I stopped in time . It dangled in front of me . He looked at me . I looked at him . He's digging up my entire block . Its going in the garage when he's here .
I wish the GTS came with Race Tex roof liner . It was standard last car . I even have it on my Macan Turbo.

Gt silver was a great choice and I am so glad that you guys posted all those pictures on the many picture threads . The truth is the car looks great in any color but this is working for me . I am glad I did the carbon roof .
I love the car already and am still learning it .

I know what you mean....busy on this end also but just hit 1500 miles yesterday and taking it away tomorrow for a long weekend. I'll be in it today after cutting the grass and other chores. Get on it Larry!
Have a GREAT week-end road trip Bobby! Weather forecast looks good in your area! ☀🌞

I have to laugh at your comments. My 992 GTS configuration locks in within the next few days and this weekend sat with my sales rep to configure. The two options I struggled with adding are (1) the race tex roof liner and (2) the lightweight noise insulated glass. Adding the race tex roof liner for ~ $1,200 seems a bit outrageous to me (although I've never had race tex on the roof liner so don't have a full appreciation for what it may offer). I did not order the light glass b/c it only cut out road noise by 9% so it seemed impossible to quantify the noise benefit; this is what I was able to garner from other Porshe forums. Reading your post is making me think to spend the extra $ and just roll the dice.

The roof liner is outrageous but it was standard on my last 2017 GTS . I never realized I'd miss it . In fact its even on my Macan Turbo . Usually I didn't even notice these things . The day I noticed how beautiful it was I was a passenger with my wife driving (Macan) me to an emergency tooth extraction . The pain was so bad on that day I found myself looking at the roof just to take my mind off it .

The glass I have is part of the lightweight package . I love the package !! The glass itself retails the exhaust note in the cabin but street noise is no different than any other 911 . The combined package is unreal !! I am so glad I ordered it . I am even glad I ordered the carbon fiber roof . Its is such a nice touch . Really pleased with this car !!

Carbon fiber roof looks great. Do you know what the actual weight savings is? Does this translate into a different driving experience?

The entire package is about 60 pounds of weight savings. The key element about the roof is the location is the center of mass of a car. My previous car had the glass sunroof which I bought off the lot. I accepted it on the last car but wanted something more performance driven with this one. The roof combined with the glass and the settings for the steering along with the weight savings provides an overall aura of musical driving bliss . I haven’t even hit the throttle all the way with only 371 miles on it so far.

I let the throttle lose a few times today even with the bride in the car, she was like whoa!

I believe the carbon roof saves 3 lbs. However, it's really about the look. The carbon fiber roof on a light color brings a unique, sportiness to the car. And the GTS 992 being a more simple (without the wing of course) yet elegant lines - the carbon fiber roof (and possibly matching mirrors) is the perfect way to add some personality to the look. Any BTW, if race-tex roof liner is optioned, then you also need to purchase the matching sun visors, which adds to the $1,200. Your silver, black and yellow calipers with carbon roof is a killer combo.

Rennlist says 4 pounds but Porsche says "30 percent" reduction from the steel roof .They dont say what the steel weighs . I am also not even sure of the steel panel is alumninum. This press release shows it . The lightweight gene

I think the main advantage is the reduced weight and torsional rigidity benefits . In the old days of 997 and earlier every car came with a sunroof . That was further compounded with the weight of a glass roof . The Targa is so heavy (300 Lbs) that Porsche made it the only GTS variant without the GTS suspension .

I looked at this build differently than some others . When I read that the GTS had near GT level performance I wanted to take all the juice it could have . My only compromise was getting the lightweight with 18 way Vs the buckets (they offer the choice). My heart said buckets but my age said 18 way in a daily driver . Everything else (right down to the traditional Gt silver) was with creating something special out of this GTS . It also had to be a car that I could drive every day .

Just curious yrralis1 - did you ever consider adding black stone guards on the back wheels hubs? They might look pretty cool and not really add any weight.

I have seen them and are not for me . I am not really a fan of stone guards to begin with . Drawing further attention to them creates an even bigger eyesore than uniformity .

Last curious question: if you were able to get the fixed aero wing, would you have chosen to add to your build?

The lightweight package forbids it . A few early builds in the many hours on the configurator tinkered with it but in the end lightweight package won . My guess is the weight of the GTS aero is very different than the Gt3 . I have a Techart Type 1 package on the modded 997 Turbo . Its complete with side skirts , carbon , roof spoiler , mirror inserts .

I sure can understand why you can't let it go! Then again, you can only drive one car at a time.

Love the wheels on your 997 Turbo!

My GTS configuration is locking in today or tomorrow according to my sales rep. Cosmetics - carmine red, carbon fiber roof and mirrors, 7 speed manual, roof tex roof liner + visors...I really can't imagine needing more car capability than what this car has to offer. Going further in performance would have a high degree of diminishing returns for large bucks. And the bucks are finite in my world. Rock on and nice chatting.

Can you post the build code . It sounds really nice !!
PS. The wheels are HRE C20's in brushed clear .
PSS. I have been driving the black car for the last two days . I am keeping it !!!:ROFLMAO:
- Cont- The plan is to see this beast "in the flesh" and then evaluate whether black stone guards jive with the rest of the outfit. Like so many others, went through every color configuration conceivable and could not decide. Visited Porsche dealerships in TX, FL & OH while traveling to put eyeballs on actual porsches to narrow down choices and settle on features that were appealing. Funny enough, these dealerships are super clean, have great coffee, snacks and are very welcoming making the visits well worth the time. Seeing these cars changed my opinion dramatically from on-line photos.
