If you were waiting on a 992 Targa, you'll be pleased to know that Porsche is testing it, likely for an early 2020 launch.

The new Porsche 911 range is getting to ready to welcome a number of new members, including the fabled Targa model.

Porsche has been testing the 992 Targa for the past few months without a hint of camouflage on the test cars, giving us a better look at what matters here: the removable targa roof.

There are virtually no surprises here; following the reinvention of the Targa in the previous 911 generation, the new 992 appears to retain the same roof concept, complete with the automatically retracting glass panel that moves to store away the fabric roof panel above the driver and front passenger.

The rest is all standard 992, minus the classic Targa bar of course. Porsche ditched the narrow-body configuration completely for this generation 911, so what was before a point of differentiation no longer exists.

Power will be provided by the same turbocharged 3.0-liter flat-six engine, which in Carrera S and 4S models produces 443hp (450PS) and comes paired to the new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission – a seven-speed manual option is going to be added on a later date. Compared to its siblings, the Targa is expected to be slightly slower however, due to the weight penalty of the roof mechanism.

If you’re shopping for a new Porsche 911 and you want something less confining than the Coupe and more special than the Convertible, then the Targa is the answer to your question. The Porsche 911 Targa was never the sharpest member of the family but for many fans it has always been the right car for the job.
