I am approaching my 50th birthday so I decided to finally pull the trigger on a Porsche 911. I always wanted a Cab so that's what I'm going with. My basic question is whether it is worth paying more for a Carrera S over the base Carrera? Of course I would love the extra power, but don't know when or how often I would even need it.

Thanks for any insights. Btw, I think I'm going with the GT Silver with black top. Also I think I must get the Sports Chrono package right? :)
You might struggle with allocation and availability . I would take whatever the dealership offered because the wait is that long . However (given no obstacles) if I were buying a coupe the choice would be harder . With a cab I'd get the S . The S comes with a few extras like , wheels , Ho bump , brakes and a few options (standard) . You also get a choice of manual or PDK . I like a base coupe for those who are trying to shave off every cent (into an entry level car) but the base Cab is expensive so you have to go deeper to the S . Have you got a build code ?

Your rationale make a lot of sense, but it's the "cents" that's holding me back. I don't think I can stretch my budget for an S at this point. A friend did tell me to get an S Coupe vs a Base Cab. That made me think for about a month, but I have always dreamed about a 911 convertible with the wind blowing through my (rapidly thinning) hair. Lol. Thanks for your input!
I am a coupe person despite living in Florida . However this 922 is probably the best Cab of any any 911 convertibles . The older ones had that hump in the back . The new one is streamlined and if flatter which makes it handle better . It still sacrifices the structural integrity of a coupe . I go a step further and don't even want a sunroof .

Everyone looks at a 911 variant differently . If its a leisure fun car then a cab does make sense . It can perform well despite the compromises . I view a 911 more as an iconic sports car . Its original design was a coupe unlike the Boxster (which led to Cayman) . It has no blind spot and is the only car without one I have ever driven . The Cab changes that . I feel that I am making all types of space sacrifices over more utility type vehicles so I want the most performance I can get out of the 911 . Ideally I wanted a Gt3 but its impractical on the street asa daily and almost ridiculous . The Turbo S is overkill and realistically that AWD is a heavy front axle which takes away from the agility .

What intrigues me is the value in low option base car but after 30 years and 19 Porsches I wanted far more . I went for a GTS and optioned it to the limit . I felt that if I had to wait a year for the car I wanted to pull out all the stops . I gave EVERY color and option months of consideration . I even weighed manual Vs PDK to pick the one I felt worked for this specific car . I ended up here .
In contrast . a friend of mine wanted a lean base 911 . I got it done under 120K (using new price increases )

So if I were building an S Cab .. I decided to play with it . Sheesh ,,, it got expensive . This is where I landed The Porsche Code

Figure the floor pricing is 120K (coupe) and the high is 180K .

As for the S coupe .. Its my least favorite . My reason is that if I put everything on that S I am looking at a GTS .

Conclusion
Its lean base Vs S Cab UNLESS somehow you get a GTS coupe . Then I will have even more fun because when I bought mine I did over 300 builds in every color at every price level before I decided . For months I lived the GTS configurator life .

Definitely more bells and whistles than I am willing to spend on my first "entry level" Porsche 911. I am basically going in for the cheapest cab 911 I can buy, but feel I needed to add the sports chrono package and Bose sounds system. That's pretty much it for mine. Oh, I did add the ventilated front seats since I live in the hot South!
My first 911 had ZERO options . It had manual seats, little wheels , non metallic color. leatherette . and even worse I could not afford it . I loved that car . I still think of the day I bought it . I wasn't 50. I was 34. My local dealership had a different t manager then more recent years and I thought I could never have the car . I reached out to a dealership 50 minutes away and then salesman (no longer there) said "come look" followed by "lets talk" . I got there and there was that white car just sitting there . He handed me the key and said "go drive it" . He didn't even want to come with me but instead said "I'll get your trade appraised ". I had never been to that area and I got lost on my test drive . I came back with 30 extra miles on the car and he joked with me and said " I guess you have to buy it now" . Then we talked . He got me to empty my bank account when we were still apart .I told him " I want to buy it but I really have no more money" . I got up to leave and he said " no .. dont go" . I remember driving it home . I felt like king of the highway . This launched the beginning of a journey into madness .

So 30 years later here I am .I am older and the cars still cream my account every time but I keep going !! There is just no other material thing I own that makes me feel this way . I have a house but I am not a house person . I have my fathers cherished watches but I dont even wear them . I never bought myself one . I dont have a fancy TV or expensive furniture . I dont even like landscaping and never garden . The car is EVERYTHING .

Here's the snag you will face. For starters Porsche staggers their prices . Take an example like 18 way seats . On a base car they are #3620. On the S its #3260. On a GTS they are 2820. On. aTurbo its $1150. and on a Turbo S its free. Almost every option becomes like this and it becomes like trying to figure out Rubik’s Cube . The nicer the option the more it costs on the cheaper trim and the higher its proportion eats into that final price . Its very easy to price a base car into S territory and take the S to GTS territory . Porsche will have you climbing that ladder . Keep in mind you face this on top of 10 guys who want the same build slot . Every dealership has its own policy . There are some who wil sell to the highest buyer . Mine won't . They know they will lose long term loyal buyers and the one shot deal will just move on the next time .

I tinkered with the configurator . I got a base cab done as low as the low 130's .

You are correct sir! I stand corrected
You know my feeling on it. If buying a coupe i I would want a stripped base car . It’s buying a cab I would go for the S. Given the price of a new S and what’s offered I would head right over to a GTS coupe. I haven’t dabbled on the new pricing but I have a feeling I can get it at the 150s with essentials

I don't get it Larry. You have to compare apples with apples. Or cabs with cabs. :p You say that If I want a cab, I should get the S. Fine, that's what I did. But then you add "given the price of a new S" you would head right over to a GTS coupe!?! But it's NOT a cab Larry!

So then, should it be a GTS cab?

OK, I got it, My bad. You mean if you were condering a 911 S coupe you would go and spring for the GTS...coupe! 😅
Sometimes cars prices lead to cross shopping. When I spec a cayman in 911 territory its right there . In fact when I see someone build a Macan that’s in Carrera S territory I’m there too. A 992 S Cab can price in GTS coupe territory. Not only that but it will not fetch as much at resale and face competing with 2 more years of production on the used market . Now if he really loves that cab and it has to be But I start looking at prices and at some point I get priced out. 160K for any type of S is a lot of money !!

When you bought your car it was a different price scale and there were no GTS slots. In fact my first post said to see what they can offer . All of this discussion may become decided by what the dealership can offer him

Agreed! But I had to read your first paragraph a couple of times. Especially the last sentence. LOL! 😅
Sheesh !! Haha !! I was not only using dictation but in my black car in the heat with no reading glasses . The phone works poorly in the heat and can sometimes even shut down . Its that hot here and I am that blind . Thanks for the heads up !!

I was told a year if I put a deposit for a Macan. My salesman tends to round up so we probably would be less. I have al not dared to discuss in 911 because I just bought one but when I did I was simply told put a deposit . The GTS was not even announced yet. I considered a Touring and I would’ve been number 46 on the list. I gave both cars thought. I even thought about keeping my car and not going through with this. I’m glad I did but I don’t know if I’m ready for a second round with a Macan. Never in my life did I follow boats in the ocean and wonder if I was going to get the slot or have somebody try and take it away from me. I am so glad my dealership came through. They made a lifetime customer from me

IMO you should get the Sports Exhaust package :)
It’s not a “must have “ but is a nice to have option . It adds no performance however it does make a nice synthetic sound in sport mode. In sport plus it shuts off to open the valves for increased performance. Thus if you like pops and burbles when you stomp on it it’s great. I have it on my GTS standard. I never turned it off. If I didn’t get sport exhaust the middle ground is the sport tailpipes . It changes to look from those square standard tips to the duel .

That is a beautiful car. Even though I can't afford an S for my "entry-level" Porsche 911, I think my base cab will look just as good. Oh, I'm also seriously considering a change of color from GT Silver to Gentian Metallic Blue. Your photo has reinforced my potential change. I do have one question for everyone, should I spring for the Sports Exhaust package or not?? It's another $3k! 😭
The gentian cab with a blue top
Is beautiful . I have this love-hate thing with Gentian. There are moments where has this purple hue that push me away but others that gravitate me to it . Some love that chameleon color. GT silver is a classic. It will never be a color that stamps a year or time period on a car. Looks like white or black GT silver is the only metallic color that fits in that category of forever . It is a Porsches official race color and most of the cars in the museum are GT silver. This car that I have now is the first one. I have always been a white or black very conservative color guy . The car Bobby has with the red top is the traditional GT silver and red combination. I also really like it with the blue. It’s hard to the side with the cab whether to go to tone or more uniform. It adds another color into the mix to further torture of the configurators work.

Hello all. I too just placed an order for a Turbo cab. It’s also a 50 year Bday gift for myself. I am now thinking of switching over to a GTS. The $40k in “savings” sounds appealing. Do any of you guys think that the GTS needs options such as the “power steering plus” or “rear axle steering “? I don’t want to overbuild the car and not get anything out of it.
thank,
Steve
I talk almost daily with. friend who has a Gt3 and a Turbo S Cab . If I were going for a convertible I would not get a GTS . I would get the Turbo. In fact do you even have. slot for a Turbo ? Most dealerships are charging north of 30K ADM and they have no cars of either . He told me the Turbo S cab its so fast that it won't even matter that it has no roof . He also said that he finds the Cab suspension flatter than the coupe which he had previously . He told me that he was able to weigh both cars (the previous coupe and his Cab ) and despite what Porsche claims it was 50 pounds delta .

Regarding power steering plus - Back in the pre shortage days EVERY car on my dealership lot had power steering plus . Its cheap 200 dollar option . Some guys feel its. a deal breaker but I am indifferent about it . I never ordered a car with it . Just out of curiosity I asked my wife "which Macan does she think had it" ? We had 5 Macan's and only 1 had it . She had no idea . Now if small woman can drive a two ton SUV and not even know it shows how useless the option is .

Rear axle steering is great . The only drawback is the car then gets the lithium battery and it cost 2K to replace if it dies , Some guys chose to omit it just because of cost . Others like myself feel its part of having the toy. My last GTS did not have it . I still loved the car.

Thanks! I’ve watched these videos a couple times already. Very informative and Nick is a hoot! I think I’m already down to the “finer strokes” of specs. A couple that I’m curious to hear opinions on:

  • Extended range fuel tank
  • Pre-wiring for dash cam

Thanks!
The extended range fuel tank is a no-brainer. I have it in my car and it’s absolutely wonderful. I get about 500 miles on a tank full. It’s been kicked around about the excess weight of the fuel in the car . One does not have to fill it all the way if he is that concerned. The dash cam is just a personal opinion thing. I don’t have it in my car because I’m not on the track with it. On the street I have mixed feelings about it. It’s purely up to you.

This is the only part that confused me about your build Larry. How much attention you paid to weight and then went with extended tank. Why have it if you do not fill it full….If you fill full why be so concerned with weight of other components….
Extended range is even a choice on a Gt3 . A glass sunroof is not . There is a reason for that . The added weight is exactly in the right place, low in the car and in the front, improving f/r weight distribution, as well as aiding in steering turn in, with reduced understeer, especially under weight transfer from braking. And the added range is significant

Ok... I found the discussion on the side markers. Definitely not a big deal, but seems like they could easily make them clear, but still have the amber bulb. That would comply with the US rule of amber in the front and red in the back. Hmmm...
I bought them. They had them at my dealership but Suncoast Parts has them too. Side Marker Lights - 992
