Of course you can but save the receipt. They will have to reset the service warning on your computer. If they are a good independent mechanic, they should have it.

There is one caveat. Usually dealerships have extremely expensive diagnostic equipment which independent shops tend to lock. If however, you only have one dealership within proximity, you really don’t have a choice.

How about recall-related repairs? Usually, all the parts and labor necessary to complete the repair are paid for by the manufacturer (who reimburses the dealer).
