Porsche Dash Cam Prewiring - Hack

For those who specified dash cam prewiring we now have more info about what u get for your money.

Prewiring provides a proprietary connector in the courtesy light overhead console which has a ground, constant 12v and switched 12v.

If u r using the Porsche dash cam this comes with a harness that plugs into the connector and the power supply side of things is plug and play.

It's my understanding that when u order from your dealer and provide your VIN the coupe package comes with front and rear camera and appropriate harnesses. If you have a cabriolet you only get the front camera and harness.

I am going to use this connector to power an aftermarket dash cam and my radar detector - so I will adapt the Porsche harness to provide me with what I need.

The Porsche harness is part # 9Y0-044-955-A and costs about $32

This will eliminate using the mirror tap and will provide dedicated fusing for your attached devices.

I just compared the camera wiring diagram to the harness connections

I have a cabriolet and there are only 3 wires entering the prewired connector

The prewired female connector connections in the overhead console are

Red/White is 12v hot all the time
Brown is Ground
Black is switched 12v

The camera harness connections are

Red 12v all the time
Black is Ground
Green is switched 12v

These connections don't matter if you are simply connecting a Porsche camera to the prewired plug.

If you plan on making your own harness you need to confirm these "pinouts".

Utilizing this connector eliminates the need for a mirror tap and will provide a dedicated fuse for your camera and / or radar detector.

I had my car pre-wired for the Porsche dashcam. Should I attempt to locate the plug in or have Porsche charge me for installing the dashcam? I have no idea where the plug in is located. I've been disappointed in lack of guidance from Porsche, especially since I paid extra for the pre-wiring.

Access to the connector is obtained by removing the courtesy light panel. There is one T20 Tork screw under the right hand flap shown above. After removing the screw the panel simply pulls off.
You should get a price from your dealer to install the camera with the plug and play connector install should be no more than an hour labor.
I plan on modifying my install to provide power for my radar detector so I will self install.
It’s not too difficult and you can program the camera yourself with the phone app.

For future reference, I just had my Porsche Dashcam installed today. It still took about an hour and cost me $160 even though I paid for pre-wiring when I ordered my car. I highly recommend you take it to a place that specializes in audio installation and not a Porsche dealer service department. I finally gave up on the latter due to lack of responsiveness and no confidence that they knew how to deal with the camera electronics (they are more mechanically inclined). The dealer also quoted me $2,000+ for the installation. They are clueless.

The Porsche Dashcam app on a smartphone is a little tricky to pair with the dashcam, but works great after you figure it out.

The camera harness I ordered arrived today. I’m going to fabricate an “add on” to this harness that I can use to power my radar detector and also an aftermarket dash cam if I go that route.
I will still mount the Porsche OEM camera bracket on the windshield in case I use the P cam.
I will post pics as the project advances.

I guess the Porsche camera uses a usb c connector when it plugs into the dock.
Do you know if the Porsche camera is 12v ?

The docks input voltage is 12v so I’m interested in determining if the dock reduces the voltage into the camera to 5v or not ???

FYI, Cartunes off of Roswell Road did a great job with my installation so if you need “professional” assistance. 🙂 They can also handle the radar detector wiring.

so here is my modified wiring harness which plugs into the Porsche Dashcam prewiring.
It will supply switched and constant 12v and ground. These are the 3 wires appearing out of the yellow sleeve. I will use the switched 12v for my radar detector. I need to test the usb C connector on the Porsche camera dock to determine what is the output voltage - if it is switched 5v I will be able to connect an aftermarket dash cam to dock connector with a usb C to micro usb cable.

For some reason the harness has a video output cable - I don’t know where if at all this connects in the car ???

This is exactly why I decided to change my major from electrical engineering at Georgia Tech. 😆

I don‘t have one so I can‘t help you. 🆘
This weekend I installed / modified the harness for a dash cam and radar detector.
I specified my cabriolet with the dash cam prewiring which provides a connector behind the overhead courtesy light panel. The connector has a ground, switched 12v and permanent 12v source.

My original plan was to install the Porsche OEM camera harness, which I purchased. A couple of issues caused my plans to change.

The cabriolet has very limited space behind the courtesy light compared with the coupe since the cabriolet latching mechanism takes up a chunk of space in this area.

I could have packed the harness in the space under the plastic cover, below the courtesy light, but I chose not to since I don't plan on using the Porsche OEM camera.

I also determined that the camera dock for the Porsche camera, in typical Porsche fashion, uses a proprietary connector not a USB C connector, so I couldn't use the dock to supply an aftermarket dash cam.

So I hacked off the male connector from the Porsche wiring harness I purchased and used this to connect the female connector behind the courtesy light panel. I used this to provide switched 12v to my radar detector and to a 12v to 5v converter which will power my aftermarket 70Mai dash cam.

Thanks for sharing @audi4t . This job will be on the top of my list when I get the car.

I was hoping for plug and play wiring. It’s going to hurt taking wire cutters to my dream car! Was the stock wiring harness a pin style connector? If so, I’ve used these in the past and I might order one if you think it’ll work.

The harness on the car stays intact - I cut the plug off the harness that I purchased so I could create my own plug and play harness
Buy this harness from any Porsche dealer to get the plug.

@audi4t I tried to find a way to contact you for a couple questions.

I also specced out my 992GT3 with prewiring and would like to go with BlackVue Dashcam and have switched power to my Uniden R7 without a mirror tap.

So, essentially buy the wiring harness, cut off the male connector, and solder on an RJ11 plug for the detector and Blackvue powercord for the constant 12V? I think Blackvue is 12V not 5V so no step downs needed.

And there are just three wires right in the proprietary connector so both detector and camera add-on cords to one ground wire?
Hi

I’ve attached some additional info

The connector below can be purchased from ECS and apparently is the equivalent Male connector on the harness - much cheaper worth buying to see if it works

the sketch in the second pic shows the pin out connections and wire colors

for the prewired female plug

the brown middle wire is ground

the black wire is switched 12 volts

the female is the Prewire end the male is from the connector cut off the harness

hope this helps
