Perhaps someone can educate me here. Don't remember the source but I recall hearing that LiDAR (LEO radar) is so effective that by the time any radar detector goes off you have already been had. True?

LiDAR and Laser are essentially the same thing. Very accurate at short range and use a focused beam of infrared light. The beam is triggered at a specific vehicle and typically is not continuous therefore no advance warning - conventional radar typically is “on” all the time so there is advance warning.

Basically your are "toast" if your are detected by LIDAR (Laser). It will be too late when your radar detector goes off. Some suppliers will try to market laser jammers as a solution. IMO, this is not a viable option for some, since it is a misdemeanor in certain states. See links for more info.

Confirms my understanding that there isn't a detector that's effective with LiDAR-you could be thoroughly impregnated before your detector goes off. Can't see the value of a detector if it can't provide some degree of advance notice against all forms of radar.

If police are using LiDAR / Laser u r correct if they tag u any warning is too late to take evasive action.
However, the vast majority of units operated by law enforcement are conventional radar. Primarily because they are so much cheaper to purchase than LiDAR.

Also conventional radar is better in high traffic, poor weather conditions at identifying speeding vehicles. That’s why in urban environments radar is more prevalent than LiDAR.

For me, there are enough potential speed traps that can be avoided by having a detector and using Waze that continued use is justified

And then there is GATSO RT4 and MRCD coming at you now. MRCD (and MRCT) has been creeping into the U.S. for a while now. I'm glad the Uniden R8 I have is able to detect both. It may not save me if I'm pushing hard on the skinny pedal, but it let's me know it's in the area and I can slow accordingly.

I have a K40 hardwired in my 2022 Macan GTS. In the nearly 19,000 miles that I’ve accumulated in 7 months—you read that right, many, many smiles per gallon—this has been indispensable on trips from NYC to Montana and NYC to as far as the panhandle of FL. It detects K, KA, X, and has laser jammers. Pricey, but worth it in my opinion and love the stealth mount: a pair of LED’s on my steering column, and a pair of small sensors mounted in my front radiator grille.

Hey Folks...so looking to purchase a Radar for our new 992.

I have had radars before but the "need for speed" ended a while back.

However with the 992, I know, inevitably I will be pushing it.

And here in SoCal the CHP is quick and unforgiving.

I have been looking into below models thus far:

1. Valentine V1 Gen2
2. Uniden R8
3. Escort Redline 360c

Appreciate all your recommendations and advice.

Thank You!

I have the valentine and it saved me a few times. Only bought it because it was advertised in a Porsche magazine. I'm sure they are all good though.

I have 2 Uniden 7’s and a Passport

I would recommend either brand

I use the radar detector together with Waze police warnings to give me as much advance warning as possible
